Are you looking to shop for a new mattress? It doesn't matter if you need a king-, queen-, or twin-sized mattress, since the same information applies to them all. Two types of mattresses that you may be between are memory foam and innerspring mattresses. Here is what to know between the two of them.

Innerspring

An innerspring mattress uses a series of coils that act like springs. They have been around for a long time and are likely the types of mattress that your great-great-grandparent slept on. However, innerspring mattresses have come a long way over the years and can be quite comfortable. They are designed to support your body weight by distributing it across many springs, which have the strength to push back against you to provide the support that you need for sleeping.

You'll find that with an innerspring mattress, the coils are very quick to respond to your movement. If you are the type of person that turns over frequently during the night, you'll likely find an innerspring mattress more comfortable because the springs immediately pop back up and contour to your new position. The springs also provide a bit of bounce, which is what people think of when they picture a mattress.

If the temperature of the mattress is a concern for you, know that an innerspring mattress tends to be cool overall. That is because there is room for air to travel underneath the mattress, and heat doesn't get trapped in the mattress.

Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses are a newer technology that was developed by NASA in the 1970s. While it was originally designed as a way to provide crash protection, it found its use for seat cushions and mattresses. Many people love memory foam because it contours to the shape of their bodies. The foam is slow to respond to movement and can provide plenty of relief. Some people compare it to the feeling of quicksand as they sink into the foam as they lie down to fall asleep.

The temperature of a memory foam mattress tends to be hotter. It is not going to feel like you are sleeping on a hot pad though, but it is notably cooler than its innerspring counterpart. That is because the heat from your body is directed back toward you rather than having a way to escape.

Are you still undecided? Head on over to a store that sells queen mattresses in your area and compare both types of mattresses in person.
